Scars and Why They’re Sexy

September 11, 2013 by

I’ve been thinking about scars. I had a minor surgery last Tuesday and had to go back on Thursday to have the area restitched. The nurse was very careful and precise with me. “I want to make sure the scar is as small as possible,” she said.

Grateful for her care and close attention, I started thinking about all kinds of scars — the ones on our bodies and on our hearts. Why are we so quick to hide them and so afraid to show them?

We aren’t proud of our scars. But we could be.

Our scars are an access point to who we are. They represent our stories, our secrets and our pain. They show others what we’ve experienced, what we’ve been through. What if showing our scars actually brought us closer to each other? And what if owning our scars brought us closer to ourselves?

I looked up scar in the dictionary. It says, “a mark left on the skin or within body tissue where a wound, burn, or sore has not healed completely and fibrous connective tissue has developed.”

Whether physical or emotional, our scars never heal completely. They are part of us, and therein lies their beauty.

Like the connective tissue protecting our physical scars, an inner strength develops to protect the heart, mind and soul.

I always peek through Danielle Laporte’s emails and she recently sent one on staying open. She says that personal growth teachers often speak about being open, but sometimes it can feel impossible. “Sometimes opening up means ripping your heart open,” she writes. “Sometimes, it means staying just one minute longer when you’d rather run. Openness is a three step process: 1. Open. 2. Stay open. 3. Open some more.” I love her and I love this.

We all have wounds, cuts and scars. We’ve all experienced pain. Mine is different from yours which is different from your best friend’s. Allow yourself to feel the pain. Let yourself heal. Own your scars, move forward and yes, absolutely stay open.

Life has many brilliant gifts to reveal to you. We only get those gifts when we keep going.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Creativity Workshop last month with Sara Armour at Tranquil Space. We were able to raise funds for Tranquil Space Foundation to provide further programming for young women and teen girls. Cheers to you for making a difference!
